Nomadic Picnic is a participatory performance, an unconventional meal with strangers, with the only rule — silence. It is an intimate and gustative experience for up to 16 people, who are served with sculptural, conceptual dishes prepared by us. The meal consists of six vegan, organic courses without gluten and added sugar, the most universal diet enabling everyone’s participation and respecting nature. Instead of chairs, tables, and cutlery, participants eat with their hands and sit on specially made carpets which we named “Picmats.” They are arranged during the performance in a special way relying on proxemics, which is the study of distances between people in space and how it influences communication and behaviour. “Nomadic Picnic” seeks to go beyond common modes of verbal introductions and interactions. It challenges modes of being together and eating together so that people can get to know themselves and others through the senses and through an experience, which is simultaneously collective and individual. This is an ongoing research project exploring the realms of human-human and human-food relations.
